·        Tell us the age and sex of the child or children you are interested in adopting.

2.           Available Children: The D.I. F. (Family and Children’s Services) of Mexico will inform you of a child or children that are available.

3.           Home Study: Have a Home Study done by an accredited agency in your state of residence. (time period depends on the state)

4.           Documentation: Acquire all documents that are listed on the Mexico Adoption Application.

5.           Mail all documents to David and Karen Smith at the P.O. Box in Eagle Pass, TX for interpretation and notarization by an authorized agency in Mexico.

6.           File I600A application: When your Home Study is complete, apply for an I-600-A (pre-approval for immigration) from Homeland Security.  (Approx. 6 weeks)

8.           Apply for Passport:

9.           State Capital Paperwork Approval: When all the paperwork has been received and translated, the D.I.F will send it to Saltillo, the state capital of Coahuila, to be checked and approved. (Approx. 2 months)

10.       Petition-To-Adopt, required visit: When the papers come back to the D.I.F. in Piedras Negras the prospective parents and grandparents will travel to Piedras Negras to sign the petition to adopt. (or provide death certificate)

11.       Mexico Visitors and Adoption Visas: While in Piedras Negras the parents will apply both Visas. (U.S. Passports are required for the parents).

12.       Final Adoption Decree (Sentencia): All paperwork will be presented to the Judge in Piedras Negras for review and the final adoption decree (sentencia). (Approx. 3 months)

·        Once the sentencia has been received the child/children are legally adopted by the adoptive parents.

13.       Apply for Child’s Passport & Visa: Travel to Monterrey Mexico to apply for a Mexico Passport in the child’s new name and apply for the U.S. Visa to cross into the U.S. (Approx. 6 weeks).

14.      Pick up Mexico Passport: Travel to Monterrey to pick up the Mexico Passport. (1 day)

15.      Pick up U.S. Visa: Travel to Juarez Mexico for U.S. Visa. (1 to 2 days)

·        Cross into U.S. and travel to new home.
